I think I'm into the shell/exoskeleton, and as for shape I can't stop chuckling at the idea of it looking like a little cannoli with the eyeball looking out one end of the tube and the flagella wiggling around at the other end.
So...tie sort of not broken

I propose the exo-est of skeletons! As well as a bowl shape because why not.

Ok, bowl shape with exoskeleton it is. Do you want an extra eyestalk or an extra flagella with (or without I guess) spike?

Another spikey would be nice. 200% the lash, 120% the movespeed.

Ok, your still unnamed creature on its unnamed planet with it's unnamed suns finds itself in the middle of crossing currents. One will take you closer to the surface more towards the outer edge, another down a dark tunnel, and another about the same depth but more inwards (still going around the surface, not underground). (Outer meaning away from the ice lens, inwards meaning towards it.)

To the surface, with out light vision!

You get carried along in the current going towards the outwards surface. Nearby is a large piece of rock at least 50 times your size. On its surface you see a tube shaped creature with a spiked flagella, very much like yours, coming out the back end of it and two eyestalks that are a bit longer than yours it seems to have curled around itself, one facing forwards, the other backwards. It also has a circular mouth that seems to be made for boring through rock. Which is what it is doing up until it spots another creature nearby. No, not you.

This other creature is somewhat sphere shaped with small fins in the center of it on top and below. Additionally it has a jet in its rear end and two spikes on the front. It also has a small hole below its mouth (the mouth is between the spikes). It turns in the direction of the tube shaped creature and closes most of the distance quickly as it jets forward.

What do you does?


(And this reminds me of a follow up question I forgot to ask. Where is your mouth?)

Flay the creature with the jets.
Mouth should be on our soft underbelly between the tentacles, I guess, as opposed to a hole in the shell.

I agree with Kal in both aspects, not much to say here.

The spherical creature jets ahead to the tube creature and winds up between the two of you as you flail at it with your spikes. It tries a few stabs at each of you, grazing the tube one and one attack deflecting off your exoskeleton, before making an attempt at escape. As soon as it does, the tube creature goes back to the rock, though it's keeping an eye trained on you.

Nibble at the rock, but watch the creature to make sure it does not attack you for making it share its food.

Seconded, with the addition of using our tentacles to hold us tight to the rock in case a current comes along to pull us off.

Ok, you stab your spikes into the rock and hold on which wasn't necessary per say, but it does help keep you steady in the strong current. The tube creature eventually disappears from your sight as it tunnels it's way into the rock.

After some time (generations) you notice a piece of what we shall dub plant life tangled up in a bit of crystal.

Eat your veggies, now, so you can grow to become a big, strong organism. Don't you want that?

Eat both! We must be strong!

You eat the plant for a while and after a while the crystal pulls loose of the plant.

Wrap a tentacle around it and save it 'til we're done with the plant. Then eat it.

Wrap a tentacle around the crystal and eat the crystal first before continuing on the plant.

Ok, there's several problems with what you're trying to do. But your creature is not smart so I figured that wouldn't stop it from trying for whatever reason. First of all, the crystal is a few times bigger than your creature so there's no way one of your flagella wraps around it. Secondly, you're nowhere near strong enough to hold either thing in place in even a mild current, let along one as strong as this.

So what actually happens is this. Your creature jabs a spike into the crystal and tries to go after the plant and gets dragged away with the crystal. Which it then eats.

Congrats, even though you're stupid you managed to survive and thus get another evolution now. =P

EDIT: Wait... We have spiky tentacles so... Angler fish-esc crystal lure!

Size increase? Steal some DNA from our plant friend and start photosynthesizing? Storage capacity? An organelle that filters the nitrogen from the water and stores it either to assist inner processes or if we're not worried about those a way to spurt concentrated nitrogen? (Not sure what that would do, but my guess is that it wouldn't feel good for other creatures)

Not big on the flailing jet tentacles, considering that'd be basically useless.

I vote for the plant thing.

@Clock: What you are saying is a piece of crysalline-like substance that appears to be a crystal that will lure prey to you?

I think a size increase, as well as a slight flexibility of the exoskeleton (more like cartilage than a shell). EDIT: also go with the photosynthesis thing
