While it takes a bit, the fight is fairly one sided and the one with the spike kills the big one. After it's done, it begins to eat the remains.

Suggestion
Wiggle towards the remains and consume a portion.
Using our newfound vision, watch for if the spikey one starts moving towards us, wherein wiggle back to the rock.

By the time you manage to wiggle over, it's already eaten about half the remains. At first it doesn't seem aware of your presence, but then it moves to attack you. Though it has little luck since you can see and it cannot. Still, it comes close a couple times and you back off back to.... well away since the rock is no longer within sight, having drifted off on a current somewhere. Fortunately the spiked thing just goes back to its meal and doesn't chase you further.

On the plus side, you did manage to get a bit to eat. Not quite enough to satisfy you though. So, for the next place our little guy will go, shall it be somewhere less or somewhere more occupied by other life forms?

I say somewhere more occupied by other life forms, though be wary of other forms with spikes or similar.

Your still nameless creature gets pulled along the currents and it can see a lot of movement in the area. Most of it too far away for it to see, but nearby it spots an interesting event. There is a three way fight near a bit of crystal. There is a large creature (a bit larger than the one we saw before), another of the ones with a spike, and a third that propels itself with a jet.

I propose the organism moves toward the fight, but keeps at a distance until a winner presents itself.

I suggest that the creature try to sneak past the fight and eat at the crystal, as they don't really have eyes, and it would be easier to notice us after the fight has ended.

I suggest both. Sneak to the crystal, keep an eye on the fight, keep semi distant from the fight

Indeed, the other three creatures don't notice you as you sneak up to the crystal. You gently nom on it as you watch. The fight goes on for a bit. The jet creature dashing at one of the others intermittently while the large one occasional slams into one and the spikey one stabbing the large one or trying to stab at the one with the jet, land glancing blows only twice before the fight ends and both while the jet creature was practically stopped as it turned. It's hard to tell who would have won in a one on one fight, and perhaps it would have come down mostly to luck. As it turns out though, the jet creature is the one left standing, if somewhat wounded.

It completely ignores the corpses and moves over to the crystal. You don't have much time to act as it's quite fast.

I propose we try to hit it in the side the wound is on, don't follow it if it runs off though.

Seconded, but go after the corpses left by the jet creature if the jet creature cannot be subdued.

The jet creature basically immediately attacks at soon as it's aware of you. Fortunately it's not very agile and you can see it coming. It puts up a good fight, almost hitting you once (and this probably would have been a severe wound if not outright lethal as it basically just launches itself at high speed at its target), but it was already wounded at after the third time you hit it, it doesn't have the strength left to pull away from you and you finish it off.

So I guess the query now is, what do your prioritize eating before something else wanders by?

Eat the crystal first, then eat the jet creature, then the other corpses.

By the time you finish eating the crystal, other creatures have eaten the corpses of the large one and the spiked one. One of them, with no apparently obvious interesting traits, then comes over and starts to nibble at the jet corpse.

Go and fight the bland one, but watch it for any hidden specialties.

As soon as you attack it, it flees.

Ok, now for the next evolution!

I say we get some flaggella (I think they're called that, moderate speed/agility)

Fagella or jets seem good options, movement definitely seems like the thing to invest in.

Well I guess it's flagella then since Copper was the only one to offer a specific opinion on a single option.

Ok a few generations pass. Your new form has an eyestalk and a single flagella. Nearby are a few different groupings, but you'll have to get closer to one to make out specifics. All you can tell from here is that there is a lot of activity in one spot just in the water, another cluster of activity around a large rock, and a small crystal that seems to have almost no activity nearby, but is down where it is darker. You don't have to pick one of these options though, and could simply go in search of something else.

I say we go over to the rock.

I'd suggest we go over to the crystal, We're not really made good for fighting.
