Mertropolis
A few days after your interviews, they are produced (better than I'm producing them now) in the Daily Wave under a piece done by Swift Slate.
The following evening on the Evening Tide Ocean Breeze disparages Col Lider, Floe, and Reseda (with some pretty borderline anti-plant pony racism).
The following day there's an article in the Mertropolis Gazette written by Bumble Sea praising all their actions, specifically those of Reseda's and holding her up as an example to other plant ponies and to others for how they should try to view plant ponies.
After a bit the six fade from public consciousness (and with that fading they no longer get the kind of preferential treatment by most they got in the first week).
A month goes by and it's announced that Urban Sprawl will be unveiling his group statue of the fallen heroes at the base of the still being worked on Mertropolis Tower. You all get personal invitations (as did everyone who was a hostage).
Each of you arrive and become part of the crowd (whether you really wanted to or not). Eventually you get to the closest area near the covered statues, having permission granted by your invitations. Looking around you recognize the other hostages from the incident and each other, who even if you didn't see perform that person's act, have heard about by now to figure out who they are based on the descriptions given and the attention they're getting from the other people around you. After a bit you notice that the feel of crowd is one of mixed excitement, hopefulness, somberness, and tension. You notice more than a few people looking around expectantly and nervously. As if they're waiting for something to occur besides just the unveiling.
Everyone give me a Streetwise check. If you want you may also make a Perception check (or something else you think would be relevant). Feel free to interact with some NPCs/each other too.
- Interviews:
----------Gear Craft-------------
Gear Craft invited me into his apartment. Inside I'm met with a room that would be better described as workshop.
Interviewer: "So, first off. How are you feeling Mr. Craft? Have you fully recuperated?"
Gear Craft sits down on a table holding a sewing machine and replies, "Well, I'm doing ok, myself. Recuperated? That's a... different story."
I: "How do you mean?"
GC: "Well, I can't get over the fact that all those heroes gave their lives for us. I mean, the nicest thing I've ever done was keep my friend from getting dragged up there, and somepony like the Mare of Steel died, for [us]. How does that even work?"
I: "You put that issue that we're all grappling with rather well. You say you kept a friend from being taken hostage? Could you describe what happened?"
GC: "Well, I was visiting my friend who works at the tower, just hanging out a bit, when this creepy beam, started shining through the windows, one by one. It got closer, so I shoved my friend out of the way, but just before I could jump for it, it grabbed me. I should really visit her and let her know Im alright."
I: "My, how noble of you. And not your only noble action that day. But, I'll come back to that later. And yes, she'd probably appreciate that."
Gear Craft didn't respond verbally but, smiled in a self-conscious manner.
I: "So, what were your thoughts when you got to the top of Mertropolis Tower?"
GC: "Well, I was... I was pretty frightened, because, being in this city for a while, you see all kinds of stuff, but right at the Tower? Almost unheard of. When I saw Steelheart, I started to panic. Steelheart isn't exactly well-known for hostage retention, you know? Then I saw the device, and that's when I REALLY got scared. Those kinds of machines are NEVER good news."
I: "How would you describe the state of those around you and your own thoughts while you waited for the heroes to show up?"
GC: 'Well... they all looked about how I felt... couple of 'em, must have been tourists, actually looked excited! Me, I didn't know WHAT Steelheart's plan was, so I was just hoping that the majority of us got out of there with all our pieces still attached."
I: "And so you did. In no small part thanks to your own efforts. While I've of course heard what you did from the other hostages, would you mind telling me about it in your own words?"
GC: "It wasn't muc- wait, you've heard from the other hostages? Then they're all okay?"
I: "Well, most of them. A few are still in the hospital, unfortunately."
GC: "That's terrible. I hope they're ok."
I: "Of course. Our wishes go out to all of them and their families."
We pauses solemnly for a moment before continuing.
GC: "Well, when the heroes... when they... you know. I just... ran over to the device and started ooking for something to screw around with... this stuff was WAY out of my league though, so I just looked for any tell-tale signs of power limiters, Cooling devices, you know, something that if I got rid of it, would make the thing blow to Kingdom Come."
I: "What was going through your head at the time?"
GC: ""I... nothing, really. Well, after the heroes... I decided that my life didn't matter. If he got what he wanted with that machine, terrible things were going to happen to better beings then me. So I decided that, if I was going out, I was gonna take that son of Discord with me."
I: "So, what was it you finally found? And what happened to you after?"
GC: "Well, I found what looked like a couple of cooling tubes, and started whacking at them. It hurt pretty bad, but y'know, didn't particularly care right then. Finally, one of them broke open and started leaking EVERYWHERE. The machine started making weird noises, so I backed away, and turned to Steelheart, preparing to let him know what I did, and how he had failed."
I: "Hmm, very daring of you. Probably the best for you that you were knocked out beforehoof though. Well, thank you for sharing your view with us. Is there anything you would like to say to our city?"
GC: "Just [that] this isn't the end of heroes. I promise you all that. We cannot bow down to the whims of whatever two-bit criminal comes along, deciding to take the city. We are the city. And it's our turn to defend it."
----------Col Lider-------------
I met Col Lider at a new club called the Hobby House. It was surprisingly busy for the middle of the day. Due to his recent fame we gained access to a quiet VIP booth to talk.
Interviewer: "So, I hear you just were released from hospital care yesterday. I take it you've recovered well?"
Col Lider: "Yeah, it was pretty smooth. I still hated being cooped up in there though."
I: "Understandable. So, I take it your friends and family were relieved to see you again?"
CL: "Yeah, I think mostly they were just relieved to see that I was still alive." He chuckled.
I: "I see. What did they think of your actions?"
CL: "Can't say they were too happy about it, but I kind of have a history of getting into trouble." He smirked again.
I: "Oh? Could you tell us a bit more about that?"
CL: "Oh, you know. Just standing up to thugs, trying to spy on villains, that sort of thing."
I: "Spy on villains? That's a pretty risky hobby isn't it?"
CL: "Well it's a thrilling one, I'll tell you that!" He laughed.
I: "Not quite the thrill I'd be up for myself but, well then, I didn't help save the city I suppose. So, can you tell us what you were doing that wound up with your being taken hostage?"
CL: "Well, I was heading to a big party and I just wound in the wrong place and the wrong time."
I: "So, what were your thoughts as you were being taken captive?"
CL: "Honestly? I was more angry than anything. I wanted to be able to do something and save everyone but... well, we all know how that turned out."
I: "Yes, yes we do."
There was a somber pause before we continued.
I: "While I already know what you did from other witnesses' accounts, could you tell us about it in your own words?"
CL: "Well, really all I did was charge in and get smacked around, but I served as a good distraction."
I: "You must be a pretty sturdy one to have recuperated so quickly from a direct encounter with Steelheart like that nonetheless."
CL: "Again, I'm no stranger to fights."
I: "Well, thank you for sharing your view with us. Is there anything you would like to say to our city?"
CL: "I mostly wonder why it seems to attract so many heroes and villains!" He chuckled a bit, but was nervous and obviously hoping that cider would come soon.
----------Golden Star-------------
I met with Golden Star inside Sandy's Subs.
Interviewer: "So, how are you feeling Miss Star? Have you fully recuperated?"
Golden Star: "Yea I'm actually feeling the best I've ever feels really just a little shocked still..."
I: "Well that's understandable, we all are really. Could you tell us what you were doing prior to being taken hostage?"
GS: "Well I was just walking along taking a shortcut to pick up my little sis up from school when one of Steelheart's goon thingys jumped me."
I: "School? I thought all the hostages were taken from the central island."
GS: Star scratches the back of her head for a moment. "Hehe sis got into one of the really nice places on center island."
I: "Ah. Well, you must be very proud."
To which Golden Star smiles proudly.
GS: "Yea I am."
I: "So, was your sister taken hostage too?"
GS: "No hadn't picked her up yet. Apparently she was driving herself crazy with worry though."
I: "Ah. Well, I'm sure she's glad you're safe and sound."
GS: "Yea she is. She was a bit of a bother earlier trying to check for well anything..."
I: "I see. So, what were your thoughts as you were being taken?"
GS: "I was struggling at first but I almost wet myself when I saw Stealheart." Golden shivers for a moment at the recollection. "I decided to wait for a time I could either do something or pull off an escape."
I: "And as it turns out you did do something. I've already heard from others who were there to see it but, could you tell us about it in your own words?"
GS: "Yea. Well I didn't really think about it then just like saw what was happening and I knew I had to act even if it meant risking my life. Do you get what I'm saying?"
I gave a nod in response and she continued.
GS: "I ah helped get the others out from where we were being held but didn't actually do that much at the machine may have ripped something out but no clue if that actually like helped or anything."
I: "Well, I suppose it didn't hurt at least. Do you have anything you wish to say to our city?"
GS: "I just hope that no one forgets what the heroes all did for each and every one of us."
----------Reseda-------------
I found Reseda on the outskirts of the Plant pony commune that lies some ways east of the Broken Bridge and northeast of the Green House.
Interviewer: "Are you recuperating well?"
Reseda: "For the most part. I find myself less appreciative of rest and seem to not be as hungry, but that is likely just lingering tension."
I: "Well, that's understandable after what you went through. Can I ask what you were doing before you were taken hostage?"
R: "I was traveling to the central business district for a day trip, and decided that a stopover to see the tower might be nice... I do not think I was right."
I: "Do you have any thoughts as to why a plant pony like yourself was taken hostage? That is, do you think it held any special meaning?"
R: Reseda responded quickly, as if she'd already given the question some thought, "I suspect it was for the sake of diversity, so that as many individuals as possible would care about the hostages as a group."
I: "What was going through your mind as you were being held? What were your thoughts on how those around you were handling the situation?"
R: "Oh, so this is what it is like to be a hostage. I am really coming to hate these super villains. Who are these other hostages anyway? Is any of this significant or just random malevolence? Dare I say anything? I might be able to prevent anypony from doing anything rash, but is being a plant pony to my detriment in this case? Will speaking merely endanger myself? Maybe... Maybe I will just wait. I am patient, I am not afraid."
"Stream of consciousness things like that."
In a more timid tone that I barely overheard she said, "I may have just chanted that last one for a bit."
I: "I see. Well, eventually you did overcome your concerns and decided to do something. And I'm sure your patience was for the best. I've heard others' viewpoints on what you did but, could you tell us about it in your own words?"
R: "I saw the heroes show up and begin fighting, I reflexively disapproved of the violence before I realized that negotiation was not an option: the villain never seemed to WANT anything... besides the destruction. Still, I stayed out of the way and tried not to interfere as things heated up. Even after the machine began draining powers I just tensed and hoped. Then it started draining life energy. Not just removing supers, not just killing, but draining the life out of whatever it could...
I stopped that...
Probably. Do not get me wrong, I know largely what happened; I just still feel like that might not have been ME. Acrobatic though I might be, I am not sure I could avoid every aspect of a [war zone] to throw myself into a machine I have no idea how to work to stop a crime I do not understand for the sake of ponies I do not know."
After a pause she added, "I'd like to, though."
Reseda then embarassedly imitated a cough.
"Right, anyway... after assaulting the machine I felt an intense pain, and did not wake up until a bit later..."
I: "I see. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Is there anything you would like to say to our city?"
R: "Sometimes the most important factor for being a hero is circumstance. You need not regularly give to a diaphanous greater good. You need only be willing to see opportunities and present the bravery to follow through."
----------Floe-------------
I believe I woke Floe up. Regardless, she invited me inside and courteously offered me a drink, which I had to decline because it was a bit early for me.
Interviewer: "So, how are you Miss Floe? Have you fully recuperated?"
Floe: "Hmm?"
I: "From the incident. Three days ago." I explained, as Floe seemed to be still half asleep.
Floe: "Oh. Oh, Still sucks, it wasn't cool to watch at all."
I: "Yes, I imagine it was not. Could you tell us what you were doing before you got taken hostage?"
Floe: "I was just out for a fly. Wrong place, wrong time, I suppose."
I: "I see. And what were your thoughts at the time?"
Floe: "That Steelheart is such a [jerk], I suppose."
I: "I see."
Floe: "I guess I was scared. After all, when I go out, I don't really expect anything to happen, let alone getting snatched by one of the most dangerous super villains around."
I: "Of course. I'm sure we all feel the same way."
I: "So, before the heroes arrived, how would you describe the other hostages?"
Floe: "Just a scared as I was. We weren't told what was gonna happen to us. There was a lot of us, so no one really stood out."
I: "I've been told by the others who were there what you did but, would you mind telling us about it from your own perspective?"'
Floe: "Well, I don't like to brag but, I was a pretty talented spellcaster. I don't remember many of the cool spells I use to know though, so I just kinda rushed up to Steelheart's minions and distracted them however I could."
I: "And what were you thinking at the time?"
Floe: "I should drink less." Floe said in jest.
I: "Well, thank you for your time. Is there anything you'd like to say to our city?"
Floe: "Hmm. Yeah. Everyone who reads this interview should check out my band, The Market Crash, if you like music which is a mixture of rock and awesomeness. We play at a couple of the bars around here. And keep on rocking Mertroplis."
----------Coral Wrench-------------
I met up with Coral Wrench as she was exploring the city with a pair of friends.
Interviewer: "So, how are you feeling? Have you fully recuperated?"
Coral Wrench: "I've had a couple odd moments, but otherwise I'm good as new."
I: "Well, that's good to hear."
I: "So, I hear you just arrived to our city briefly before you were taken hostage. Some welcome huh?"
CW: "Yeah, I have to wonder if this is an every day occurrence in the big city. Is it?"
I: "Well, no. And certainly not anymore. Not with all the villains gone."
CW: "Good. That was just insane!"
I: "I'll bet. Could you tell us about it? About what you were thinking at the time?"
CW: "I was just trying to imagine what it would take to get somepony to that point, and what might have been going through his head."
I: "I see. Did you come to any conclusions?"
CW: "Too many. It would have helped if I'd known more about him."
I: "Ah of course. You're new here and wouldn't know much about any of our locals, famous or infamous. Though I suppose, nopony really knew much about what went though Stealheart's head anyway."
I: "So, what were your thoughts about how the other hostages were faring at the time?"
CW: "I was more focused on Stealheart. After all, what good was the condition of the others if he decided to kill us all anyway?"
I: "I see. That's fair I suppose."
I: "I've heard of what you did from the others there at the time but, would you mind telling us about it in your own words?"
CW: "Well, he'd taken away all of our things that he could find before the heroes got there, so when they got there and distracted him, I took my *tiny* wrench that I had somehow earlier gotten tangled in my mane, and threw it at his machine. I guess I was just lucky in where it hit, because it went absolutely haywire after that."
I: "So, after your experience do you intend to stay in our city?"
CW: "Well, my friends and I have mostly been, for the past few months, exploring the seas for where we want to continue our lives. You see, we're from a very small town on the coast, and there aren't any opportunities for entry-level workers, so we figured we would start in a decent size city. So far, except for the incident, Mertropolis is exactly what we'd hoped far, so to answer your question, yes, we do."
I: "That's good to hear. Well I hope our city treats you as well as you've treated it. Do you have any words for the city?"
CW: "Um, stay safe and don't do drugs?" She shrugged. "That's all I can think of, really. Oh, and listen to your engineers when they tell you not to do something. It could save your life."
The following evening on the Evening Tide Ocean Breeze disparages Col Lider, Floe, and Reseda (with some pretty borderline anti-plant pony racism).

Col seems to just be staring somberly at the statues for a while, before noticing he was being talked to. "Huh? Oh... yeah, that was me. You must be that giraffe that tore apart that machine." He said as he turned to look at him, though he kept his guard up, mostly because of muscle memory.

Re: Mertropolis
Streetwise results: Over the last couple weeks (including right here in this crowd) you have heard the following rumors/strange news:
All of you: There have been sightings of lizard ponies lurking around the sewers or ruins of Old Mertropolis. (Note: You've been hearing this one for as long as you can remember every few months or so.)
10: There have been a rash of fires in Old Town over the last few days. (Has been in reputable papers/radio.)
15: There was a bank heist in Brassberry a couple days ago. (Has been in reputable papers/radio.)
20: There have been sightings of eerie lights and strange noises coming from deep below the waves.
20: The Cardsmen, a gang in Princessess, have been more active recently.
25: There has been noise coming from an abandoned mine in Blazing Bluffs.
25: People have heard strange noises and cloaked figures wandering the woods in Forte.
Floe: There is going to be an underground (meaning secret) battle of the bands somewhere in Central in five days at midnight.
Perception results:
Golden Star notices there are more than a few police officers and personal guards around.
Col Lider notices that in addition to the police officers in the crowd there are more than a few camped out in the windows of nearby (they're not all that near though) buildings with muskets. (Note: Muskets here work on steam power instead of gunpowder and instead of firing bullets, they fire crossbow bolts. These are fairly recent inventions, only becoming mass produced in the last two years.)
Floe realizes the crowd is half-expecting some kind of super villain attack when the statues are unveiled.

"Hmm... seems they're expecting a tough fight..." Col mumbles to himself after looking around. "Could it have something to do with the Cardsmen? That wouldn't explain why they're packing such advanced technology though..." He said, mostly to himself, while pondering.

Re: Mertropolis
Col's check: There are several factors to this equation. The foremost is that they must be expecting trouble. And there's no shock to that given this city's history. This even is practically super villain bait. And it appears they're making sure it's well trapped. Additionally there's the fact that there's now enough of them for a large amount of the police force to be equipped with them and they'll probably become officially standard issue soon (they're already unofficially). There's also the fact that from that far away they need something with a good deal of range and "accuracy" (that's in quotes because... yeah... they're still muskets). Also there's the commercial reality that they might be functioning as free advertising of the product (though of course the police models are obviously not legally for sale to civilians).
Gear's check: The Smith, Smith, Smith & Wheatley 57J Steam Muskets are the top of the line mass producible steam propelled long range single man bolt throwers on the market today! -Blah blah blah specs go here!- Police issue muskets (57J-P) have a few unannounced additions as well as removed features that slowed down reloading and assembly. By your surmisal you would say the unannounced additions include more cooling vents and a small three bolt magazine.

Great, so we're villain bait... Col thought to himself after coming to a conclusion. "It's not that big of a deal, but you might want to keep your guard up." He said, making sure to do the same.

Coral sniffs the air, her eyes drooping. "You smell nice... like my bed..." She then promptly falls asleep, her head falling on Reseda for a pillow.

Re: Mertropolis
Reseda caught the falling pony with no small amount of bewilderment. She mentally perused a selection of one liners before realizing there is nopony to whom the joke may be appropriately told and that the sound might just awaken the likely very tired sleeper. The plant pony stabilizes her apparent passenger and moves to the other interviewees, hoping that one of them might be able to explain this.
- Spoiler:
- Acrobatics to position Coral's sleeping form into a position that causes no hindrance: 12+15
Stealth to not be overly conspicuous: 8+12

Golden squints a bit and looks at the duo. "Weird it looks like the Selkie is taking a nap... Why would any one take a nap in the middle of a powder keg like this?"
