Strange Lands, a tale of Shadows and Heroes OOC
Welcome to Snerviak. A strange realm with quite a few dark goings on that... Oh, I'm getting ahead of myself aren't I? *Ahem* You see, Snerviak is your typical, run-of-the-mill fantasy setting on the outside, Drow aren't trusted because of the secrecy and trickery surrounding their race, fae are thought to be wild and beautiful, Dwarves dig deep into the mountains for riches... But that's just the surface. You see, this realm has a bit of a problem that many people have been trying to hold back and defeat, and that is an affliction to the land that is known by many names, but most commonly called "Derakan". You see, this is not just an affliction to people, but to the land itself. Lands afflicted by Derakan rarely see sunlight, and as such the plant life is changed to rely more on the Earth and, with the help of a little magic, the shadows. This isn't the only effect, as strange creatures and energies appear in lands like this as well. Twisted beings that should not be seen by any mortal and that are fiercer than most of what the Fae's homeland brings up appear, sporting strange, eldritch abilities that simply do not belong in this realm. And the energies in the land start to affect the inhabitants themselves. Now, here's where the good part comes in, people affected by these energies are affected in many ways, ranging from mutation to insanity, but not all people touched by these energies are twisted. In fact, they rarely gain new powers and insight into matters, such as finding out that undead aren't actually all that bad if properly handled. Of course, this is frowned upon by some, some who are too set in the ways of the world or too worshiping of Pleor's light that they think you must be a heretic to think these things, but a lot of the world is starting to realize the effectiveness of these new heroes, though only starting. Of all those affected by Derakan, Fae find themselves the most affected, at least in terms of range of effects. A member of the Fae affected by Deranak are more likely to just gain powers... But they're also more likely to be twisted by the energies, becoming dark, bloodthirsty creatures bent on killing. Anyways... This is where you come in. You are some of the lucky creatures who find themselves still in control of themselves (If a little different) and gaining powers from this mysterious energy. With it, you have just become Snerivak's newest power and its greatest enemy, and your actions will shape the future events of this world and how the world views those affected by these energies. Will you find out the mystery behind the source of this madness, or will you rebel against those who outcast you and start a war? The choices are endless, and you're the forerunners of fate. Welcome to Snerivak.

Re: Strange Lands, a tale of Shadows and Heroes OOC
Mechanics info, quoted from the one who asked me all the questions.
Addition: You can get whatever mundane items you want, just as long as you don't go overboard with item costs.Ramsus wrote:Since I asked Hum all manner of questions prior to this going up and he ran off after posting the setting flavor, I'm gonna throw up the mechanical info people need to make characters. This is just sorta a placeholder till Hum adds it into the first post himself though.
Where to make character sheets: http://www.myth-weavers.com
If you don't have an account, set one up, it's simple. Then make a 4e character sheet. Only issue is you're going to want a name for your character before you make the sheet. Or you could just go with your Class name I guess.
Level: 5
Races allowed: All except for Deva and Revenants (if you want to do something that doesn't officially exist, wait till Hum is back and ask him) One thing to note is your Race's ability bonuses won't matter with the classes we're using.
I'm pretty sure Hum agrees with me on the standard of "dude, don't play a race someone else is, there's plenty enough for some variety". Also... don't pick Human since... yeah, I didn't design the classes with them in mind cuz Humans are boring and you already play one irl.
Abilities: Standard as per the PHB
I recommend this (pre-racial/level bonuses) stat spread: 18 (primary stat), 14 (secondary stat), 11 (one of the two stats from the defense category your secondary and primary stats don't belong to), 10, 10, 8 (< don't put this in Con, especially you Clockeye)
Bonus feats: Everyone starts with a free Expertise type feat (most of them have Expertise in the name). Next level we'll be getting Improved Defenses for free. (The reasoning for this being that these kinds of feats only exist because of Wizard of the Coast making math errors and basically patching these things in as a "quick fix".)
Skills: We each start with any six skills trained we like (plus anything we get from races/etc.). Still you're probably going to want to pick skills your stats are good for. (And we might want to discuss who has what a bit as a group.)
Powers: There are some ways for you to take Powers other than what your class grants. There's Skill Powers in PHB3 that anyone trained in the appropriate skill can take. In various other sources there are racial dependent powers, powers from Themes, and other stuff maybe too.
Background and Themes: We're using both. Here's two handy links.
Backgrounds: http://community.wizards.com/content/forum-topic/3084151
Themes: https://community.wizards.com/content/forum-topic/3331711
Magic Items: One level 6 item, One level 5 item, four level 4 items. Special rule (don't abuse to buy an extra level 5 item or anything), if we want one (or more) of those last four items to be a item lower than level 4 we can just subtract the value of the item from the gold cost and keep the remainder to use for other item purchases or to hold onto for later. (Don't spend any leftover on consumable items.)
Consumable Magic Items: 200gp allowance. Keep the spare money. Denote this seperate from any money leftover for Magical Items (we're going to have separate piles of money for these things so that spending gold on anything but more permanent items isn't shooting ourselves in the feet).
Mundane Items: fffff forgot to ask, we'll have to wait I guess.
Reagents: Think we might be getting a pile once the game starts of maybe Hum will be handing out some before. Dunno exactly.
Rituals: Yeah ok, this only matters to Paper. And I don't know. I think Hum is gonna give you a few extra ones you start with?
Languages: What your race/etc. says, but don't fret, we can learn more in game.
Homebrew stuff: Anything in my Homebrew thread here in the forum and I can make new stuff that, with Hum's approval, people can take if they request something that doesn't exist elsewhere and is reasonable. (Don't forget to check out the post after the classes for miscellaneous stuff of use to just about everyone.)
Generally useful resource: http://www.wizards.com/dndinsider/compendium/database.aspx
("Multiple Sources" typically means Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdom and/or Heroes of the Fallen Lands, but not always.)
Hum also has another useful resource thing he or I can send people via skype.
Also I have most of the 4e books (aside from the Book of Vile Darkness) you might need and a Dragon Magazines 364-406 so if you need something, just ask.
What people are playing as far as I know:
Me: eladrin/drow half-breed Gloomhound
Copper: pixie Darksinger
Sub: [race] Longshadow
Paper: [race] Corrupter
Clockeye: Shade Windracer
Ramsus' suggestions for people:
Copper:
Feats: Staff Expertise and Superior Will
Level 2 Utility: Take Shadowsight
Sub:
Feats: Bow Expertise or Shadow Expertise (one of my homebrew feats), Hidden Sniper
Weapon: longbow or even spend a feat on superior weapon training to get Greatbow
Level 2 Utility: Take Shadowsight
Clockeye:
Feats: Bludgeon Expertise and Mark of Storm
Paper:
Level 2 Utility: Take Shadowsight

Re: Strange Lands, a tale of Shadows and Heroes OOC
Have a post based on Deities!
Deities don't have alingments, they instead focus on their purviews.
Lolth wants to be god of all fae races and is not going to possibly side with the Primordials if they come back to life. She's also basically the spy of the gods, though only Ioun and Vecna know this.
Torog doesn't exist because he is too petty, this is no reason for alarm or drastic change.
Thazradin may or may not exist, even clerics have never heard of him.
Angels can be made and serve any god.
A god can invest more energy into creating an Angel, have an Angel stay in their service long enough, or have them do something important and that Angel will become an Angel of said god, becoming much more powerful and changing appearance to match the god they serve.
Mortals typically aren't strong enough to summon Angels of gods, but can summon "Shadows" of them, which look just like them (though experts might be able to tell the difference) but are typically weaker, though diverse in their power levels.
Chosen, people who are chosen by the gods to be their servants in the mortal realm. Pretty badass.
The gods each have their own different divine domains.
- The gods and their purview's (Skip if you have read both the PH and the DMG):
Avandra, the god of change, Avandra delights in freedom, trade, travel, adventure, and the frontier. Her temples are few in civilized lands, but her wayside shrines appear throughout the world. Halflings, merchants, and all types of adventurers are drawn to her worship, and many people raise a glass in her honor, viewing her as the god of luck. Her commandments are few: ✦ Luck favors the bold. Take your fate into your own hands, and Avandra smiles upon you. ✦ Strike back against those who would rob you of your freedom and urge others to fight for their own liberty. ✦ Change is inevitable, but it takes the work of the faithful to ensure that change is for the better.
Bahamut, called the Platinum Dragon, Bahamut is the god of justice, protection, nobility, and honor. Paladins often revere him, and metallic dragons worship him as the first of their kind. Monarchs are crowned in his name. He commands his followers thus: ✦ Uphold the highest ideals of honor and justice. ✦ Be constantly vigilant against evil and oppose it on all fronts. ✦ Protect the weak, liberate the oppressed, and defend  just order.
Corellon, the god of spring, beauty, and the arts, Corellon is the patron of arcane magic and the fey. He seeded the world with arcane magic and planted the most ancient forests. Artists and musicians worship him, as do those who view their spellcasting as an art, and his shrines can be found throughout the Feywild. He despises Lolth and her priestesses for leading the drow astray. He urges his followers thus:
✦ Cultivate beauty in all that you do, whether you’re casting a spell, composing a saga, strumming a lute, or practicing the arts of war. ✦ Seek out lost magic items, forgotten rituals, and ancient works of art. Corellon might have inspired them in the world’s first days. ✦ Thwart the followers of Lolth at every opportunity.
Erathis is the god of civilization. She is the muse of great invention, founder of cities, and author of laws. Rulers, judges, pioneers, and devoted citizens revere her, and her temples hold prominent places in most of the world’s major cities. Her laws are many, but their purpose is straightforward: ✦ Work with others to achieve your goals. Community and order are always stronger than the disjointed efforts of lone individuals. ✦ Tame the wilderness to make it fit for habitation, and defend the light of civilization against the encroaching darkness. ✦ Seek out new ideas, new inventions, new lands to inhabit, new wilderness to conquer. Build machines, build cities, build empires.
Ioun is the god of knowledge, skill, and prophecy. Sages, seers, and tacticians revere her, as do all who live by their knowledge and mental power. Corellon is the patron of arcane magic, but Ioun is the patron of its study. Libraries and wizard academies are built in her name. Her commands are also teachings: ✦ Seek the perfection of your mind by bringing reason, perception, and emotion into balance with one another. ✦ Accumulate, preserve, and distribute knowledge in all forms. Pursue education, build libraries, and seek out lost and ancient lore. ✦ Be watchful at all times for the followers of Vecna, who seek to control knowledge and keep secrets. Oppose their schemes, unmask their secrets, and blind them with the light of truth and reason.
Kord is the storm god and the lord of battle. He revels in strength, battlefield prowess, and thunder. Fighters and athletes revere him. He is a mercurial god, unbridled and wild, who summons storms over land and sea; those who hope for better weather appease him with prayers and spirited toasts. He gives few commands: ✦ Be strong, but do not use your strength for wanton destruction. ✦ Be brave and scorn cowardice in any form. ✦ Prove your might in battle to win glory and renown.
Melora is the god of the wilderness and the sea. She is both the wild beast and the peaceful forest, the raging whirlpool and the quiet desert. Rangers, hunters, and elves revere her, and sailors make offerings to her before beginning their voyages. Her strictures are these: ✦ Protect the wild places of the world from destruction and overuse. Oppose the rampant spread of cities and empires. ✦ Hunt aberrant monsters and other abominations of nature. ✦ Do not fear or condemn the savagery of nature. Live in harmony with the wild.
Moradin is the god of creation and patron of artisans, especially miners and smiths. He carved the mountains from primordial earth and is the guardian and protector of the hearth and the family. Dwarves from all walks of life follow him. He demands these behaviors of his followers: ✦ Meet adversity with stoicism and tenacity. ✦ Demonstrate loyalty to your family, your clan, your leaders, and your people. ✦ Strive to make a mark on the world, a lasting legacy. To make something that lasts is the highest good, whether you are a smith working at a forge or a ruler building a dynasty.
God of the sun and summer, Pelor is the keeper of time. He supports those in need and opposes all that is evil. As the lord of agriculture and the bountiful harvest, he is the deity most commonly worshiped by ordinary humans, and his priests are well received wherever they go. Paladins and rangers are found among his worshipers. He directs his followers thus: ✦ Alleviate suffering wherever you find it. ✦ Bring Pelor’s light into places of darkness, showing kindness, mercy, and compassion. ✦ Be watchful against evil.
The name of the god of death is long forgotten, but she is called the Raven Queen. She is the spinner of fate and the patron of winter. She marks the end of each mortal life, and mourners call upon her during funeral rites, in the hope that she will guard the departed from the curse of undeath. She expects her followers to abide by these commandments: ✦ Hold no pity for those who suffer and die, for death is the natural end of life. ✦ Bring down the proud who try to cast off the chains of fate. As the instrument of the Raven Queen, you must punish hubris where you find it. ✦ Watch for the cults of Orcus and stamp them out whenever they arise. The Demon Prince of the Undead seeks to claim the Raven Queen’s throne.
God of the moon and autumn, Sehanine is the patron of trickery and illusions. She has close ties to Corellon and Melora and is a favorite deity among elves and halflings. She is also the god of love, who sends shadows to cloak lovers’ trysts. Scouts and thieves ask for her blessing on their work. Her teachings are simple: ✦ Follow your goals and seek your own destiny. ✦ Keep to the shadows, avoiding the blazing light of zealous good and the utter darkness of evil. ✦ Seek new horizons and new experiences, and let nothing tie you down.
Asmodeus is the god of tyranny and domination. He rules the Nine Hells with an iron fist and a silver tongue. Aside from devils, creatures such as rakshasas pay him homage, and tieflings and warlocks are drawn to his dark cults. His rules are strict and his punishments harsh: ✦ Seek power over others, that you might rule with strength as the Lord of Hell does. ✦ Repay evil with evil. If others are kind to you, exploit their weakness for your own gain. ✦ Show neither pity nor mercy to those who are caught underfoot as you climb your way to power. The weak do not deserve compassion.
Bane is the god of war and conquest. Militaristic nations of humans and goblins serve him and conquer in his name. Fighters and paladins serve him. He commands his worshipers to: ✦ Never allow your fear to gain mastery over you, but drive it into the hearts of your foes. ✦ Punish insubordination and disorder. ✦ Hone your combat skills to perfection, whether you are a mighty general or a lone mercenary.
Gruumsh is the chaotic god of destruction, lord of marauding barbarian hordes. Where Bane commands conquest, Gruumsh exhorts his followers to slaughter and pillage. Orcs are his fervent followers, and they bear a particular hatred for elves and eladrin because
Corellon put out one of Gruumsh’s eyes. The One-Eyed God gives simple orders to his followers: ✦ Conquer and destroy. ✦ Let your strength crush the weak. ✦ Do as you will, and let no one stop you.
Lolth is the chaotic god of shadow, lies, and spiders. Scheming and treachery are her commands, and her priests are a constant force of disruption in the otherwise stable society of the drow. Though she is properly a god and not a demon, she is called Demon Queen of Spiders. She demands that her followers: ✦ Do whatever it takes to gain and hold power. ✦ Rely on stealth and slander in preference to outright confrontation. ✦ Convert Fae to follow Lolth at every opportunity, they must know who the true lord of the Fae is.
Tiamat is the god of wealth, greed, and envy. She is the patron of chromatic dragons and those whose lust for wealth overrides any other goal or concern. She commands her followers to: ✦ Hoard wealth, acquiring much and spending little. Wealth is its own reward. ✦ Forgive no slight and leave no wrong unpunished. ✦ Take what you desire from others. Those who lack the strength to defend their possessions are not worthy to own them.
Vecna is the god of undead, necromancy, and secrets. He rules that which is not meant to be known and that which people wish to keep secret. Spellcasters and conspirators pay him homage. He commands them to: ✦ Never reveal all you know. ✦ Find the seed of darkness in your heart and nourish it; find it in others and exploit it to your advantage. ✦ Oppose the followers of all other deities so that Vecna alone can rule the world.
Zehir is the god of darkness, poison, and assassins. Snakes are his favored creation, and the yuan-ti revere him above all other gods, offering sacrifice to him in pits full of writhing serpents. He urges his followers to: ✦ Hide under the cloak of night, that your deeds might be kept in secret. ✦ Kill in Zehir’s name and offer each murder as a sacrifice. ✦ Delight in poison, and surround yourself with snakes.
Deities don't have alingments, they instead focus on their purviews.
Lolth wants to be god of all fae races and is not going to possibly side with the Primordials if they come back to life. She's also basically the spy of the gods, though only Ioun and Vecna know this.

Re: Strange Lands, a tale of Shadows and Heroes OOC
- Backstory for Twinkle Toes:
- Until the shadows came, Twinkle Toes and her family (she was the youngest daughter of a Sidhe Lord, one of the Gloaming Fey) were in charge of making sure the sky got its stars every night, and that they were taken down before the sun shown at dawn. Twinkle Toes would ride from place to place on the ground on her gifted warforged corgi, Roomba, to make sure no pixie placed a star too low in relation to the others, and she would be accompanied by her personal guard at all times, Hazelnut. She would also sometimes sing to the star pixies, to help them stay on task and work together.
One night, as Twinkle Toes was riding to a far hill to get a different angle of view on the stars being put up, she ended up being the first caught in the shadows. She doesn't remember what happened once the shadows touched her, but she does know that they changed her, both inside and out.
The most obvious physical change was the appearance of a dark star shape on her cheek, and her wings becoming... darker, it was difficult to pinpoint how, though.
The less physical changes were harder to notice, though, as she... well, she lost time. She sometimes noticed that other pixies would treat her differently, whether it be with fear, love, hatred, or any other of a number of emotions that she just couldn't explain. Whenever she confronted one of them about it, she lost time again, sometimes a minute, sometimes up to a week. The only time she didn't lose time when confronting someone was when she talked to Hazelnut about it, though he would tell her nothing. She hadn't seen him get caught in the shadows, though she could clearly see the changes it had made to his body (black stripes down his cheeks like he got scratched with ink, wings shadowy and almost skeletal looking which left him unable to fly, blackened hair, suddenly being much, much larger than all the other pixies), but she had yet to notice any personality changes in him. If he was keeping something secret from her, she knew he would have a good reason for it.
Twinkle Toes did not leave home until one time waking up from some lost time, when she found her best friend dead, and the blood quite literally on her hands. She hopped on Roomba and ran off, Hazelnut following close behind. She lost a lot of time after that, and did not wake up until almost a year later, finding herself in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar creatures. She seemed to have a reputation, and one that only made her lose more time, so she left that area to yet another unfamiliar place, one where she could act naturally and lose little to no time. The only friend she had from her old home was Hazelnut, and he acted as if nothing had ever happened, though perhaps it was better that way.
