Last month the city of Mertropolis was shaken to it's very core by the deaths of their beloved heroes Aquizard, Coil, Major Hertz, the Mare of Steel, and Zamsha at the claws of the Steelheart who perished soon after along with the disappearance (and rumored death) of Bad Lands.

You were there as it all went down on the top of Mertropolis Tower, thanks to being a part of the group of citizens Steelheart held hostage to lure the heroes to their demise. You saw the six heroes fight the good fight. You saw Steelheart's nefarious contraption drain them of their power and very life force. You risked yourself to disrupt his plan and cause the machine to lose control. You watched as Bad Lands, the sole hero left standing, threw himself along with Steelheart into the building and whirling energies. You saw Steelheart disintegrate and then there was a blinding flash of light and howling noise that drowned everything out. When you came to, rescue workers were treating those with injuries and evacuating everyone else.

While the city mourns their loss, they are also comforted by the feeling that all the villains they once feared are gone. That there are no more super powered threats to their safety. They feel that the city has perhaps been changed for the better. One thing is certain. You have changed. And you have the sinking feel that you're not the only one.


Note: Might change the name of the campaign if the players think up a team name or such that sounds ok doubling as campaign name.

Setting Info

Our story takes place in the massive partially artificial island city of Mertropolis. Here there are members of all sorts of races, who generally don't have the strength in magic or weather-crafting as those in Equestria have (assuming this even takes place in the same universe as other MLP games). Ponies are not the majority race, that would be Sea Ponies, though not by a large enough margin to match the combined other races. Nature here is wild and free and there are not nearly enough weather-crafters to control the weather of the island. At best weather-crafters keep parks and other places in balance or just as often they work as private contractors. 70% of the island's "surface" is several stories under the waves, which suits the Sea Ponies just fine. Most of this surface is actually built atop the ruins of what is now called Old Mertropolis (which was probably build on the ruins of something else). Much of the rather modern styled (or even ultra modern) city, especially the busier areas, is bristling with sky scrapers. In the center of the island is a district called Center which is home to the tallest building of the city, Mertropolis Tower, which stands at the very center of the island (and is now undergoing repairs). Center is the home of many government buildings, including the Council Office, from which the councilors who govern the city do their work. Mertropolis does not use conventional electrical lines and the like due to the plethora of ways this could go wrong. While some electronics do exist (though that's still on the forefront of scientific development by and large), most things that would otherwise be powered by electricity are instead clockwork or use small amounts of magic. One of the common magically crafted items are magically glowing lamps. These are especially important since the city has an active nightlife thanks to A) the variety of races and B) it being a huge city.

Sea Pony & Plant Pony Info
Sea Ponies come in all sorts of varieties and several major subtypes. Most sea ponies have fore-legs but, some have dextrous fins instead. There are the earth pony equivalent "Sea Ponies", the flying fish like Sea Pegasi (which can breath air and fly), Sea Unicorns, and Deep Ponies (which come in two major varieties: Angler Ponies with their electroluminescent filament sprouting from their heads and the tentacled Cephaloponies). All Sea Ponies (except for Sea Pegasi) share an additional subtype known as Selkies, which can change from their Sea Pony form into the form of a land dwelling creature (usually a pony). (Note: Sea Ponies normally breath water instead of air.)

Sea Ponies that cannot breath air use various crafts when they need to go on land or into areas of buildings not filled with water. One of the most common examples is a kind of four legged platform with a large rectangular fish tank on top.

Plant Ponies, created by the villain Mintress Experimint and freed from servitude by Zamsha, typically have the basic form of an Earth Pony but, are clearly plants. They come in all sorts of varieties and roughly 50% can breath underwater.

On average, Plant ponies will age 1 year for one month for the first 12 months, followed by normal aging until 35-42, followed by nearly no aging at all for 30 years, followed by 5x aging until death. (Not that any of them really know this since their race only came into existence 7 years ago and they've only been free for the last 3.)

Character Creation & Mechanics Info

My skype address is Ramsusofthepants. If you can't use skype, make a character sheet and link it so we can chat in the google doc's chat thing.

So the first thing you're going to want to do is think up a character concept. It could be a cyborg sea pony, a cryokinetic powered unicorn, or a Thing style goat. Then you're going to want to work with me to figure out what your super powers are. You guys aren't strong supers like superman or such, your powers are a bit more limited. Basically you'll probably have 2-3 powers depending on their strength. (Keep in mind that movement powers are a thing.) Don't be afraid to come up with ideas that aren't in the system and any that are we can strengthen for our purposes.

Then you're going to work with me to pick out how your attributes/skills are set up. Instead of the default setup, you will pick a primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary attributes (which you can name later). You will then assign two skills of your choice to the first three and one of your choice to the last. I will then pick where the remaining skills go.

Instead of an Element you can pick any Magic Utility (including the Elements, if they match your concept). Additionally, each of the elements can be taken once by the group as Utilities. (Meaning, you could pick Honesty for one of your Utilities instead of some other Utility if nobody in the group has it.)

Note: Please feel free to ask if you can use any unofficial ideas.

You get 8 racial points as per normal with the following changes:

You get the normal 5 utilities. I'm not going to go through the entire list but, there are many I will probably adjust numbers on. Utilities from my Skill Support thread are pre-approved. And so are any changes and removals suggested there.

Steady Hoofed is banned. (Along with any other Magic Drain talents that show up at any point.)

Conflicts will be handled with the above features so, there is no need for you to pick out any "combat" talents, traits, or items.

Due to the lack of combat mechanics, you will gain a Utility Talent every level.

Boons will be lesser strength individual choices (that can be combined together with other player's choices to make stronger ones) which we will work on when they come up (just saying ahead of time not to feel constrained by either of the two official Boons setups).

We will be using the Talent Specialization system. You will gain 3 TSP per level instead of the normal 2.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I'm also changing the default use of Magic Point to give a re-roll to a check any player made, rather than a +10 bonus.

Ok, now that we have our five characters all done (everyone double check that you don't have something unfinished to deal with), there are a few things I'd like you all to do before we start.

Firstly, think up some more details about your character's background. Names of people and places that are important to who they were, think more on their personalities, etc.

Secondly, I want you all to come up with an idea for some NPC that's important in the city but, not necessarily connected in any way to your character. (Not a hero or villain though, just a regular person.)

Thirdly, I want you to come up with a place of note (or even two or three if you like). It could be a single building or store, a corporation, a small district, an important park or a bridge or such, etc. (Really, as many of these as you guys like. The more fleshed out with details the city is the better.)

Double Shot: CEO of Mertropolis's leading coffee shop chain (Seastarbucks). (♂) (espresso and cream pegasus)
Bumble Sea: Chief Civil Engineer in Mertropolis. (♀) (black and yellow sea pony)

(those all need more detail and I'm not too sold on the last two)

The Broken Bridge: A once unimportant bridge between two of the western islands that make up Mertropolis until it was destroyed by a villain (as collateral, not the main target). Usually such damage would be repaired, this bridge was so insignificant that it actually served more of a purpose broken, as a reminder of how much protection heroes provide. It also makes for an amazing sight in the sunset, and is a common subject for art students to draw...

Papillon Pavillion; an upscale store known for selling high grade toys, chocolates, and other things beloved by children... that is typically members only and rather snooty about it. It's the futile dream of many a mertropolis child or child at heart to have their pick of the place, but the store stays profitable just by catering to eccentric millionaires and shipping their unparalleledly well-crafted products to those who order. The week before Hearth's Warming Eve the store opens their doors to the public, but the event has yet to be anything other than a disaster... for one reason or another.

Potential Related Supervillain:
Chaz Richards a.k.a. Prince Charles
A rather unfortunate child who was a mere street urchin, just managing to survive for a long time. However, he got caught in 'the event' and gained the power to animate inanimate objects. Despite his ability to surround himself with 'life' loyal to him, he feels more alone than ever. Rather than becoming heroic, he steals and vandalizes in an attempt to take back from the world he hates.

Tideside Beach and Tideside Cliffs: A beach at the north of Mertropolis, it's what you would expect from your regular beach. A common place to take the family for a day of fun, as well as the occasional beach party among teenagers and party animals during the night. The Tideside Cliffs watch over the beach, and while the cliffs themselves don't seem special, they are home to a number of small caves. These caves aren't too well hidden, so anyone who looks around will find them with ease. Exploring children usually find it and pretend to be pirates inside the caves for a while...

The Moon Streets: Three streets within the inner city that go halfway around the Central Business District. They go from Full Moon (found south-west) to Half Moon to New Moon (found north-east). The more "full" the moon is, the higher class the street is. The streets hold a number of apartments and a shop or two. Full Moon Street appeals more to those who are in large businesses while New Moon Street is more appealing to those who have just left university. Floe lives in one of the cheap apartments of New Moon Street, on the second floor...

Gear Craft lives in Puzzle Piece Places, a middle-class set of apartments on the western side of town. He has A kitchen, A bedroom, A bathroom, and a thing that maybe was at one point a living room, but is now a cluttered hive of technological components. He has a small balcony overlooking the water, which he lives 2 stories above. He has a small diving board on the balcony, which he set up. The apartments are HUGE, about 20 stories above the water, and maybe 15 underneath. It's owned by a nice old mare, who LOVES jigsaw Puzzles. I'm talking obsession here. As such, the apartments are shaped like a giant puzzle piece.

Swift Slate: incredibly innocuous female pony with a reputation for appearing places she logically shouldn't be able to. Respected for no-nonsense news.

Needler Haystack, fast moving highly competent reporter. Famous for finding data nopony else can... infamous for being really, really obnoxious to interviewees

Horson Quells and Horson Swelles the radio hosts: Swells is famous for 'punching up' every story to the point of misinformation and making sure every supervillain attack causes at least 50% more panic; while Quells is notable for refusing to acknowledge anything out of the ordinary and preventing his listeners from properly reacting to disaster

Bumble Sea: a no-nonsense pony, unless he's not working on something, and is often too busy with his work to go find himself a wife or fillyfriend

Golden Star at the moment lives in the Open View Apartment complex an upper middle class building on the extreme southern part of the city. The apartment includes a kitchen with attacked dining area, a bedroom, a full bathroom, a small study (really just a room with a desk and a few shelves of old books), a living room complete with radio, and a balcony all the rooms except the balcony had furnishing included. The building is 15 stories up and and 8 down the ownership of the building changes almost on a quarterly basis going from one real estate investor to another. Currently Golden's Mother and younger sister live in the Penthouse apartment just two floors up from Golden...

Coral Wrench is staying in a room at the Le Mareidien Hotel nearby the Tideside beach. (Obviously it'd be in a submerged ground level place since she's a sea pony).

Col lives on campus at the Mertropolis Institute of Technology, or MIT for short. It's a fairly high-class university, the type where people are proud to be in it and you find a lot of rich, snooty types. It's well renowned, though has a fairly high tuition fee. Col works in an on-campus lab with Dr. Shamus Ouroboro, his mentor. It's located south of Reliable Viper.

Now that the interviews are all done, you should all think on if during the last month anyone has found out about your powers and how they (and you) reacted to that.

Also, Copper Rose, please post Coral's friends' names and some details about them. Also those two locations you posted earlier could still use some details.

Edit: Also, I think it might help if we divided the city into Burroughs. That way we could refer to specific areas of the city with more ease. I'd certainly appreciate it if you guys came up with some names for them. Though we obviously already have Central, Blazing Bluff, and Tideside (maybe, I dunno, we could name that one something different I suppose).

Spoiled from having free money her entire life, so her parents are trying to prevent culture shock by providing her with moderate amounts of money, decreasing over time.

Comes from a low-income family, and knows how to support not only herself but others at the same time. Grew up along side Coral Wrench and Silver Fork, the three are usually inseparable. She may not be the fastest pony out there, but she sure is the most maneuverable, and can change directions in the blink of an eye.

These two noticed Coral's powers before even she did, so they had fun trolling her with it, though that only made her notice them sooner. Other than trolling each other, the three paid no notice to her sudden development of powers.

Grand ol'Whinny Opera House:
World Famous Opera house on the farthest west point of the city, perfect for viewing the sunrise, or the sunset over the city. Popular place for couples when it is not in use. It itself looks beautiful in the sunrise or sunset, and is a marvel of architecture and engineering.

Lancet Place Market:
Sprawling, tightly-packed street mall of classic and artisan stores on the farthest south point of the central four islands. Is referred to as a common landmark and general area, as it covers a good quarter of the island it is located on, the half of it not underwater. The first Seastarbucks is located here, itself being a tourist attraction.

Borough: Old Town residential mainly but with decent amounts of the commerce and service industries. While not actually that much older than other parts of the city Old Town gains it's name from the prevalent architectural style being reminiscent of Old Mertropolis and almost all the housing in the area being small 4-5 story row housing or even single family homes. Additionally the Borough contains the three largest public parks in the city and the most open spaces. Location middle-ish area of the eastern area.



In the last month Golden has kept her new-found powers hidden fairly well. The only one to actually find out was her younger sister who happened to be present when they first activated. Rose freaked out as much as Golden at first but quickly shifted into an almost incoherent gushing about how cool the powers were, how jealous she was, and how the powers where acquired.  Eventually a promise to tell no one was extracted after some light bribery. Additionally Graceful Star has developed some suspicion that something is ahoof but has chosen not to act on them yet.

Working on his suit, and related tech. He's finally finished setting up all his stuff the day before the campaign starts. He's also updated his will, y'know, just in case.

Lore Reed: Floe's father, a kind but timid "flying fish" sea pony who works at the underwater section of Mertropolis Library. Floe's mother doesn't live in Mertropolis, so Lore Reed raised the dragonnel mostly by himself (although packages containing a small chunk of the mother's hoard helped a lot). He would read his favourite historical tales to Floe as bedtime stories. He was disappointed that Floe had dropped out of university, although doesn't have enough of a backbone to challenge his daughter's decision. Floe doesn't drop by to visit often, and when she does, the visits are quiet, since Lore Reed doesn't know what is popular, and Floe doesn't want to care about stories or discoveries, but Lore appreciates the visits all the same...

Babble: Floe's mother, an ice dragon. She is somewhat controlling and greedy, although she tries her best to control herself. She lives in the closest land mass to Mertropolis which a dragon could hide her hoard, which is very far away, so Floe doesn't see her often. Babble did visit on special occasions though, so she and Floe do share some special memories. When she heard that Floe had left university, she was livid, and as she demanded the dragonnel to explain herself on what on earth she was thinking, she was surprised that the once quiet and withdrawn Floe began to yell and argue back to her mother. This falling out left a bitter taste in the dragon's mouth, but she still loves Floe, as evidenced by packages she sends containing a small portion of Babble's hoard (although she claims this is to help her control her greed)...

"The Market Crash": The band Floe is currently in. Arcamedis (Large-Pony-Sized Giant Snake, Lead Singer and Manager until an actual one is hired) is a blast at parties and knows where all the cool places to be are, but he is determined to see his name in lights and will do anything to get there. Low Note (Minitaur, Bassist) is very focused on what he does and doesn't talk unless he feels it is important, but is very reliable to get things done. Beat Beat (Unicorn, Drummer) is a bit of a downer, and not too fun to hang out with for long periods of time, but is unbelievably honest. The band isn't very popular, only bringing in small crowds when they perform (most of which were already going to go to the venue anyway for other reasons). Still, it's a little extra money, and between that and her mother's packages Floe is able to sustain her admittedly low cost lifestyle. The band practices twice a day at Arcamedis' house, but Floe is rarely present during the morning practice, and sometimes late for the afternoon practice. Tired of this, Arcamedis began searching for a new Lead Guitarist...

Floe had been experiencing some of the effects of her powers, although she didn't really know they existed until she saw her shadow dancing on its own accord. No one knows about her powers, and if someone did notice anything, Floe shrugged it off, saying that she was an impressive magic user before and that whatever they noticed was just a quick trick (although she knows otherwise)...

Col's parents are Bat Ponies named Bookmark and Coal, Bookmark being his father and Coal being his mother. You can probably tell their professions by their names, Bookmark being a librarian and Coal being a miner. He has and elder sister named Salt and an elder brother named Battery, Salt being the eldest of the bunch. Salt works as a chef and Battery works as an engineer, however they live a secret double life as criminals, though Col doesn't know this. Out of the siblings Col is the brashest, but also the most morally sound.

The only one that knows about Col's new found powers so far is Shamus, and that's only because of a little incident involving some lab equipment and volatile chemicals. Other than that Col's been trying to keep it under wraps, avoiding using his powers too much so he won't cause incidents. Though he has been known to use them as party tricks, most of that is easily dismiss-able as stage magic. He was a little freaked out when he first found out about his powers, but he's slowly getting used to them. He still doesn't fully know how to control them or where they came from, however.

You don't actually have to tell us here if you post. We're going to see it in the actual IC thread just as likely. That said, apparently I didn't read that post very carefully and didn't notice I needed to respond to it. Which you would already know if you weren't too flatulent to use Skype. So in response, there's a variety of machines and machine parts in the apartment. Feel free to specify any as whatever you like... so long as you keep in mind it has to make sense for Measured Response to actually have.
