Swift manages to tear herself away from the imagery to move outside, passing Vonnus sweeping on the first floor. Her whistle carries across the hills, a moment passes, and then the howl of her companion Sure returns from North, Northwest. Both are safe. Sure is enjoying the new woods.

Sora follows the elves up the stairs to the fifth floor, which appears to be a living space for the acolytes and the priest. A fairly large table sits in the middle of it, with enough chairs for the cathedral's tenants and your group. On the far side of the room is a small cooking and preparation area, as well as more stairs going up to a sixth floor. You're informed that all that is above is personal quarters and then the roof, where the great beacon stands.
Vasil sets the table with a tablecloth and gets out varied dining implements as Sora aids Aerenth in the preparation of shepherd's pie.

You can roll Cooking Implements (Wisdom) if you really wanna go hard, but like you can just take success too.

Your group is called and Vonnus requested, but Vasil returns back to the table alone. She offers, "He heard a wolf's howl and wants for someone to be at the ready in case something happens. We have the walls and guards keep watch, but he insists."

Wine is poured, and food and conversation are had, the pair if not as jovial as Sora still able to hold their own. Aerenth and Vasil are not twins, but are especially close in age for elves. They're from the mainland of Greyhawk, and had apprenticed for some number of years as wizards. Once they had their naming ceremony where they became 'adults,' they both realized that Wee Jas really sort of fit their sensibilities and they decided to commit to her together. Wee Jas has a number of temples in Greyhawk, but they were requested to come here to aid Vonnus in this new realm. And so they came, and they've been here for...well, it's been a bit. Vonnus is a native to this region, from the Rolling Mountains to the northwest of the region, just beyond what's not Greystone. He says he wasn't involved in the construction of this cathedral, but the sisters have their doubts.
Aerenth and Vasil make small talk with your group, asking about where you've come from and how you got to be here. They make over Nari and how adorable she is. Etc and so forth.

Your group gets another inspiration! Add it to whoever's sheet you like. Or just note your group now has 2 inspirations spread amongst it.
Each character would also get a HD back for the good meal.

About an hour passes, and it has become...well you assume dark outside, there's not actually any windows on this floor. The sisters begin cleaning up the table, wrapping up the portion you left for Vonnus, and offer that if you would like to continue to use the library through the night you are free to; there's going to be at least one of their group awake into the morning.

Sora hadn't had shepard's pie before, though it isn't hard for her to follow the instructions. She's happy to have learned another recipe. At some point during the dinner this comes up and Amber and Swift make jokes in their surprise at this and then again when it turns out even Nari has had it before.

Nari laps up all the attention happily. She also playfully makes an attempt to steal a bit of food from Vasil's plate just to make a bit of harmless mischief.

Amber will ask a few questions about magical stuff, mostly probing to see if they're familiar with her less than usual powers even for those with sorcerous talents.

Each will be pretty clear where they were before and how they wound up coming here. Some details being shared with the others of the group for the first time (as realistically people don't actually manage to shove out their entire life stories when they meet).

After the dinner is over they'll thank them for the offer, but inform the siblings that they plan to head out at around dawn so they have to go get their sleep. Swift will make sure to personally let Vonnus know that the wolf isn't a threat.

And then they go back to the inn they were staying at and sleep.

Those things happen!
Condensing Responses to stuff:
The sisters share your lack of knowledge about shadow magics, but have their interest peaked by it. They say they'll send some letters out, see if the grapevine knows something, and let you know what comes back to them. When/if you give them a questioning eyebrow as to how they'll get hold of you, they mention one of the minor spells they have between them is called Message, which lets them send off either written or spoken word to another. To demonstrate, Aerenth takes a sheet of paper, writes "Hi Vonus!" on it in large messy script, then speaks a brief arcane phrase and the letter disintegrates into light.

Vonnus is comforted, if only somewhat. He mentions that he's usually up through the night regardless; can't be too cautious with the Woods just beyond the wall. He hopes well for your beast, and mentions a few of the potential problems it could encounter out there.
In increasing order of threat: (down is more threatening)
Blink Dog, but they're usually not aggressive
Giant Rats
Regular Wolves
Giant Toads
Owlbear
A thing called "Byyte," it's some kind of bullshit fey magic giant boar.
The Gilded Thimble is somewhat active when you get there, a few patrons still lounging in the main area. A small group in the corner seems to be reaching the end of a celebration, most of them clearly heavily inebriated and the other few passed out on the table. Tim Tim Timmy Tim Timothy Tim Tim keeps an eye on them, but nods with a smile as you enter. Your rooms are just as you left them. Well, they've been tidied up, sheets replaced and such, but still basically how you left them.

Dreams happen.
A tower looms in the distance, its shadow casting long over Sora. Its dark weight presses on her, but she stands against it easily.

Nari wanders through a forest, balls of yellow light providing twilight illumination. She can feel something following her, but she only catches shadowy glimpses as it dashes from tree to rock to tree, always behind cover.

Amber walks through an ink-black void. Her footsteps clack on the ground and resonate into the distance. It's pretty uneventful and very black.

Swift remembers one of her bounty hunts on the mainland, but as she apprehends the perp and pulls the cloak off their face it's revealed to be Liam (the guard captain.)

Sure kicks her feet in her sleep, not that you can see it.

It's the next morning! You awake at sunup, ready and raring to take on the world. What would you like to do?

Interesting bits to check out, but you can also do whatever you want:
Mirath Tendle's place (again)
Guard's Barracks (again)
Cathedral to Wee Jas (again)
Market (again)
The Port
Hang out here with ol' Erky Timbers
Go back to sleep
Go hunt Byyte
Bring the form to Wernstrum and complete your 'quest'
Bother Liam

Before leaving the temple, Swift would have asked if Byyte is a problem that needs to be dealt with and perhaps if there might be any associated reward.

Either way, she'd tell the others about it and in the morning Sora would ask Erky if there was anything the Bronze Ring needed of them. If not they'd go ask Mirath Tendle/Liam about Byyte and any possible bounty.

Swift would also do the appropriate call to Sure which means "stay nearby" and follows it up with the "I'm fine" one.

The Bronze Ring doesn't have any particular intentions for your group, just try and be good examples for how your respective races are people and not just assholes. For example, the people of Wernstrum have licenses to show that they're competent and not just no-good do-nothings.

Sure confirms that she'll stay nearby. She also follows it up with "I'm fine".

The town's not exactly happy to have Byyte around, but the beast hasn't been aggressive against the towns themselves yet. It's made a mess of some of the farther out farms, and anyone who actually needs to go into the woods fears it. Mirath probably has some kind of reward authorized, but at the same time he told you just yesterday that he can't really offer work to any unlicensed persons.

Sora talks to the group about the idea dealing with Byyte anyway, but Swift and Amber aren't too keen on doing work that hard for free, Nari could go either way but doesn't have any particular desire to do so. Swift suggest that maybe after they go those licenses Byyte's territory might still be somewhere in the area that doesn't require them backtracking too far (and maybe Wernstrum's bounty would be bigger as it's a proper city anyway).

Afterwards they wish Erky enjoyable days and then they head to the temple and see about getting that blessing where they would also say a farewell to the people there.

Post  quietkal on Wed Oct 05, 2016 11:46 pm

Erky similarly wishes your travels well, and waves your group farewell with a smile. You also have breakfast I assume.
It's late morning, birds are chirping in the trees and fluttering past the buildings in town. Many people are already out in the gardens and what field is available within the wall, and you expect that outside the wall much the same is occurring as they ready for the coming seasons. Gotta get food to get through the winter and such, y'know.

The cathedral is much as it was the day prior. Vonnus is again found around the first floor, sweeping, but he stops his work to approach your group with a grin. A tome clad in crimson sits on the altar, as well as several bundles of spices. "Pleasant morning. I am pleased you'ave returned to receive my lady's watch over your travels. I have made the preparations already, so if you would..." He gestures you towards the altar, having you before it as he stands behind it.
He performs a ritual, asking for the Witch Goddess to use her dominion over all that is magical to enhance your spells, weaken spells that are used against you, and keep watch over your spirits.
He closes the tome, walking back over to you and gesturing for you to take the bundles of spices. "Tokens, to carry my Lady's favor. You may have noticed there is one more bundle than your group numbers. I ask that you take it with you beyond the walls; I must attend to duties here but I am sure there are souls beyond the walls that need the Taker's aid."

The 'bundles' are small, only a few twigs really, bound together with gilded ribbon.
Each of your characters that bares one of the bundles on their person gains the following benefits:
a) +1 to your spellcasting save DC
b) +1 to your save throws against magical effects
c) automatically stabilize when you fall unconscious
d) SOUL SEIZED IMMEDIATELY ON DEATH

They have these benefits until they receive the blessing of a different deity. Or until you spurn the blessing.

The group once again thanks Vonnus and wishes him farewell.

And so the group sets out on the road to Wernstrum. As soon as they're outside of the town's area, Swift will whistle for Sure to come join them. When she does, Swift ties the blessing bundle to one of Sure's legs... after Sure sniffs it vigorously for a bit.

You pass through the gate out of the city, passing by someone who seems like another guard. He gives you a polite nod before returning to keeping vigil over this side of the city.
The path to Wernstrum is a well maintained stone path. Or, it was. It's sort of a mess now, large sections of stone just shattered and missing, revealing the pebbled support beneath. There's large scorch marks hither and thither, and the outside of the wall is heavily charred. A couple of burly men are moving stone, trying to clean it up. The gateway is passable, there's still just a lot of damage before this looks any sort of nice.

Sure wanders out of the woods, a little battered but more or less doing well. Apparently even in this short time that she's already been in something of a tussle with the local wildlife. She nuzzles Swift briefly, and tries not to mess with the bundle too much.
Wernstrum isn't crazy far, but it's still a bit of a walk from Fell's Edge. Once you're fairly well out of town, the path becomes pretty nice. The stones are arranged decently; it's not horrendously unlevel; it's wide enough that wagons can pass each other while remaining safely on the path; there's an extant of grassy walking area before the forest shows its claim to the land. So on, so forth. It's a relatively impressive civic feat. Relatively.
Once you're fairly well out of town, Nari and Swift become aware of a presence following the group from within the woods. Whatever it is, it's staying about 50' out, staying a good 30' or so into the wood. They're not sure how long it's been following the group, but it's definitely been at least a minute.

At the same moment Nari starts to say something, Swift quietly tells the group that they're being followed by something in the woods, but advises they keep going for at least a bit to pay closer attention to what it's doing. She also asks Sure to try and pick up it's scent and give a signal for if it smells like a natural creature or not.

Sure gives a rarf sound which indicates natural creature and also points her nose at Sora. Swift understands the first part and gets the second part might mean something and looks at Sure quizzically. Sure gives a hruff noise and moves over to Amber actually putting her nose right into the back of Amber's leg, to which Amber looks down with confusion at her, and repeats the rarf noise. Swift gets what Sure means now, the training from back when they were bounty hunting. She wasn't sure Sure would remember that much complicated detail after so much time without practice and all the distracting sounds and smells of a new land.

Swift reaches down and gives Sure a head scratch and a "Good girl!" and says to the others, "It's probably a person."

At this Sora nods and stops and faces the appropriate direction and calls out loudly, "Hello there. May we help you?"

There's a brief pause, before a suave looking man swaggers his way to the edge of the forest. He brushes a leaf from his hair as he addresses your group. "Well hey to you too. And yeah, there is something you could help me with." He stops about at the edge of the woods.

"Y'see, I'm a licensed bandit here in Wernstrum. I'm here to relieve you of some of your valuables. Y'know how it is."
He waves a piece of paper at you. It does seem to have Wernstrum's extremely simple signet on it.

Sure nudges Swift again, indicating there's yet more of the smell out in the trees.

(sound of GM rolling dice)
The man sweats a bit, before looking towards the wood ahead of you and calling out, "S'alright. These ladies recognize the law." There's a weird amount of emphasis on those last words. Two men who you'd unabashedly describe as 'thugs' appear from out of the tree line and start walking up to you. They do not look happy and are both armed with a scimitar and several daggers. One of them carries two scimitars.
"These are my compatriots, for when people have especially large amounts of goods for us to relieve them of."
Sure continues to nudge Swift, still trying to direct her attention further up the road.
Insight:

The thugs continue approaching the group, sidling up to the suave looking man. He also sounds frustrated. "Yes. Them too. So you gonna give up the goods or we gotta call the guards in to sort this all out?" Again, odd emphasis.

What was a somewhat quiet stealthing through the wood has become a medium loudness as many more people work through the woods toward you. It's in the range of a squad, you think. (8-12 people)

The approaching thugs start to reach for their weapons, but your group is more than ready to respond in kind.

Amber notices her companions tense for battle and she says, "Hold a moment." and casts a spell on both Sora and Swift before quickly backing away.

"Rather than the guards, it's an undertaker you should be calling!" Sora roars enthusiastically and charges forth, drawing her shiny new bastard sword and shield, and enters a fighting stance.

Swift charges the bullshitting bandit and whips out both her rapiers and stabbing with the same motion as the draw.

Sora and Swift delay until after Amber's turn.

Amber uses Twin Spell to cast Enlarge/Reduce (Enlarge) on Sora and Swift. Then moves. Concentrating on Enlarge/Reduce (0/10 rounds).

Sora attempts to Intimidate the bandits: 14 + 6 = 20.
Sora moves, draws bastard sword and shield, uses a bonus action to enter Tunnel Fighting stance.

Swift moves
Attacks Sarren: 11 + 7 = 18 vs AC
damage: 7 + 5 + 2 (favored enemy: humanoids) + 3 (enlarge) = 17
Bonus action offhand attack Sarren: 7 + 7 = 14 vs AC
damage: 1 + 5 + 2 + 1 = 8

Sora's shout very much intimidates the guards, they drop their weapons and rapidly back off. They are not prepared to fight a giant oni.
Bandits A, B, and C become Frightened until confidence can be restored!
Whoops:
Frightened means they have disadvantage on ability checks and attack rolls while their source of fear is in sight. They also cannot intentionally move closer to their source of fear.
It is not Sarren's turn yet, so he cannot try to coax them out of Frightened. Disregard the Deception.
Swift makes a solid strike against the suave man, tearing his clothes and revealing armor beneath. He manages to smoothly dodge her second strike however.

Bandits A and B attempt to disengage and back off of Sora, BUT SORA DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE DISENGAGE ACTION. They each proc an AoO as they leave her reach if Sora would like to follow up on that.
Bandit C flees off the top of the screen and leaves the combat!
Bandit D makes his presence known from the southern forest as he fires a crossbow bolt at Amber. He misses.
Back to your turn!

As the bandits flee her mighty wrath... Sora tries to smack them with her mighty wrath anyway.

Nari notices the bandit firing upon her new shorty friend Amber and rushes up to the nearest tree and touches her staff to it. Transparent white and red little puffs of foxfire dance around the tree as it comes to life and Nari asks, "If you wouldn't mind helping us defeat these not nice people starting with that guy that'd be great!" pointing at the bandit that fired at Amber as she retreats a bit so as not to get underfootroot.

The newly animate tree does as requested and uppercuts the bandit with a sturdy branch.

Sure rushes over to join Swift in biting the talky bad dude and maybe dragging him down to the ground for the easier throat tearing.

Sora opportunity attack vs Bandit A: 7 + 8 = 15 vs AC
damage: 5 + 7 + 3 = 15

Sora opportunity attack vs Bandit B: 7 + 7 = 14 vs AC
damage: 3 + 7 + 3 = 13

Nari moves, uses 5 charges of the Birch Staff of the Wilderness to cast Awaken on a Huge tree, politely requests it attack the group's enemies starting with Bandit D, then moves some more.

Awakened Tree moves.
Awakened Tree uses Slam!: nat 20 + 6 = 26 vs AC (autohit) It's super effective!
damage: (1 + 3 + 6) + (1 + 6 + 2) + 4 = 23

Sure moves. Then Bites at Sarren: 9 or 14 (advantage from Pack Tactics) + 5 = 19 vs AC
damage: 3 + 2 + 5 = 10
If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 11 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Sora's new sword strikes true, felling the two bandits trying to flee from her.
The Awakened Tree walks over to the nearest bandit and just annihilates him with a sharp crack of a branch. The ground is watered with his blood. The trees will feast tonight.
Sure is able to sneak up on Sarren, quickly knocking him to the ground.

The bandits kinda take a moment to think. You all have a living tree on your side and two giants. Now might not be the best time to strike. Sarren also seems to have this though as he stands and quickly backs away, Swift managing to land another strike on him as he focuses on dodging Sure's teeth. He gives you a weak, "You'll be hearing from the guard about this!" as he rushes into the woods. It seems unlikely.

The bandits disappear into the woods! You could probably track them if you want to.
Sarren takes the Dash action, then moves 15' off the top of the map! You could pursue if you want. You don't have to for this encounter to still be considered 'won.'

Amber moves and casts Chill Touch at Sarren: 2 + 7 = 9 vs AC that's a miss....

Nari dashes up.

Sure dashes up to Sarren.

Swift moves, switches to her longbow, and fires at Sarren: 17 + 7 = 24 vs AC
damage: 4 + 5 + 4 = 13

Sora dashes closer to Sarren.

Awakened Tree dashes closer to Sarren.

Nari's magic stone flies true through the brush, finding its target and striking the final fatal blow. There's a quiet thud as his body falls.

The gm shakes his head and begins crumbling notes. Not that he's disappointed, just that...dammit Sarren you could have not tripped every time.
Combat's over now! Each character gets 170 xp.

You're now standing a bit off the road between Wernstrum and Fell's Edge, inside what you recall is technically part of the Old Wood but it's so far from the majority of it this is basically just a pocket of random forest between the Ghave river and the road. The quiet ambient sounds of animals doing whatever they're doing returns slowly.

Swift instructs Sure to keep her senses alert to any approaching threats and then goes over to inspect the body. She severs Sarren's head just to make sure he's not just unconscious and will get up and stab someone while they're not paying attention and then begins searching his body for anything of note. Amber lends a hand in this searching. Sora gives a kind of disapproving look at the decapitating but it isn't a big deal since he would have done the same to them assuredly. Nari goes over to the now awakened tree and says, "Thanks big guy! So, do you have a name?"
